The Kind of Creeks you want in your backyard
Posted : November 30th, 2011 by Graham Ord
A summer holiday destination for boaters and wine tasters and a winter wonderland for snow boarders and skiers, Vernon BC has the image of being an affluent town with few social problems. Yet sadly like many Canadian cities it is also home to many people who are either homeless or who struggle as the working poor. Vernon has its fair share of people who live way below the poverty line. Yet rather than sit around and do nothing, a bunch of local poets and musicians are coming together to work along side the Salvation Army to make this Christmas a little bit more joyful for some of its less fortunate families.
Vernon Band ‘The Creeks’, who usually perform their eclectic Roots music in the wineries, festivals, pubs and coffee houses around the Okanagan valley, are pulling together a bunch of musical friends along with a few Poets to host a special charity fund raiser on December 17th called ‘Christmas with the Creeks’. I asked them what inspired them to get involved with helping the needy in their city and they simply said, “We thought it would be fun! If you have a pulse you cannot help but be aware of those in need at Christmas. We have worked with the Salvation Army on food bank initiatives before so we are happy to do so again”. “We just want to make people aware of the need and offer people a chance to help in meeting it. Hopefully as artists and music lovers we will engage with our community and have fun whilst doing so”.
Now that’s the kind of Creeks I want in my back yard!
‘Christmas with the Creeks’ will be hosted at Vernon Christian Fellowship Hall, 4506 29th Street in Vernon (click for map), on Saturday December 17th at 7pm. Performing along with the Creeks will be ‘the singing country cowboy’ Rob Dinwoodie, violinist Anjuli Bakshi, The VCF Allstars and various poets, monologues and seasonal readings.
Admission is $5 (or a larger donation) plus two cans of food for the food bank. All proceeds will go to help the needy in Vernon.
The Creeks have been together for just over two years their New CD is scheduled for release in Feb 2012. It was self produced and engineered by Andrew Smith. It will available at the usual online outlets including iTunes, CD baby, bandcamp and of course at their gigs. More info: http://www.facebook.com/#!/thecreeks
