Jan Vozenilek is not only an amazing cinematographer but is an activist based here in Kelowna. Using his fine (and I mean FINE) skills at the camera, he has managed to team up with the world-class photographer Chris Jordan to document the astonishingly symbolic environmental tragedy happening on one of the most remote islands in the world. This project, which is getting world-wide attention, is called the Midway Journey. He shared his story, passion, and findings at Katalyst this past week where CHBC (local news channel) showed up for an interview.

A little about the project…

“On one of the remotest islands on our planet, tens of thousands of baby albatrosses lie dead on the ground, their bodies filled with plastic from the Pacific Garbage Patch. Returning to the island over several years, our team is witnessing the cycles of life and death of these birds as a multi-layered metaphor for our times. With photographer Chris Jordan as our guide, we walk through the fire of horror and grief, facing the immensity of this tragedy—and our own complicity—head on. And in this process, we find an unexpected route to a transformational experience of beauty, acceptance, and understanding.”

Absolutely Horrible…..When I saw the cover photo, I tried to assume that Jan was a visual artist and was posing the bird with plastic?! How pathetically wrong I was……

Thank you Jan for spreading this important message with such eloquence and passion. Onward!
